63mm Australian Grommet Dust Cap (Pair)
A grommet dust caps fit the following Hubs and bearing sets;
- Parallel
- Two Tonne
Some hubs do not have machined chamfers in the boss and rear of the wheel hub. Insertion can be brutal. Using a pipe of the correct diameter significantly improves the ease of installation.
Dust cap can become loose if hammered into position too frequently, even on the first insert. Once the dust cap is home, stop hitting it. The extra hit can make it loose-fitting.
Question: Should I fill my grease cap full of grease?
Answer: No. The grease cap’s purpose is to catch excess grease from the bearing cavity. Your grease cap should be inserted dry.
Grease is generally oversupplied during the greasing process. It will exit the bearing cavity at high speeds and during the initial heating and cooling process. Note that grease never re-enters the bearing cavity once it is caught in the grease cap.
What is the purpose of the grease cap?
- To catch grease?
- Or to prevent the ingress of dust?
But what exactly are grease caps used? Are they simply decorative accessories for your trailer, or do they serve a real purpose? Well, you can be assured that grease caps are not cosmetic.
Although a shiny chrome grease cap can be a nice touch on a rather dull-looking trailer wheel, it serves a fundamental purpose. Grease caps are the small, round metal covers at the wheel hub’s centre. Sometimes, they’re called dust caps, but for clarity, we’ll call them grease caps from this point forward.
Finally grease caps protect your wheel bearings from the dirt, dust, sand, water, salt and road grime that can (and will) destroy bearings. Without grease caps, your wheel bearings wouldn’t survive long out on the road.
