Safety Chain Hooks
Trailer & Caravan Safety Chain Hooks
Couplemate™ exclusively stocks Austlift™ branded safety chain hooks because they have a Government-issued Component Type Approval (“CTA”) number. Our advice is to only use hooks that have a CTA number for safety and compliance.
Safety chain connections are tricky, as they must comply with two Australian Standards and one ADR. These are:
- AS3776:2015 – Lifting components for Grade T(80) and V(100) chain slings
- AS4177.4 – Caravan and light trailer towing components
- ADR 62/02 – Mechanical Connections between Vehicles
The hammerlock you require will depend on your Aggregate Trailer Mass (“ATM”). However, because hooks, hammerlocks, and shackles all fall under a different Australian Standard, these components will have a Working Load Limit (“WLL”) rating (not an ATM).
So, to work out the ATM, we must do a few calculations based on the Breaking Load Limit (“BLL”):
- BLL = WLL x 4*
- ATM = BLL / 1.5
* 4 to 1 safety factor.
