How to Install 10-Inch Electric Brake Shoes
When unpacking your brand-new brake shoes, note that the pair allocated for each wheel is not identical. For safe operation, trace these steps:
- Orient the Shoes Safely: The shoe with the shorter lining (Primary) must always face towards the front of your vehicle. The shoe with the longer lining (Secondary) faces towards the rear and links directly with the park brake arm.
- Avoid Severe Component Damage: Installing brake shoes backwards will cause rapid overheating, potentially causing your drum to glow red hot and destroying your wheel bearing grease.
- Inspect Supporting Elements: Always inspect your brake magnet face during shoe replacement. Replace electric magnets if the built-in wear indicators are no longer visible.
- Consider Full Backing Plates: If return springs, lever brackets, or electromagnets show signs of severe wear, a faster, safer, and cleaner solution is upgrading to a fully pre-assembled backing plate that bolts directly onto your axle flange.

Ensure reliable towing control and optimal stopping power by following these critical installation and adjustment steps.
- Check orientation: Identify the primary shoe (shorter lining, faces the front of the trailer) and secondary shoe (longer lining, faces the rear).
- Inspect the magnet: Examine your brake magnets for uneven wear, exposed copper, or loose wiring while replacing the shoes.
- Lubricate pads: Apply a tiny smear of high-temperature brake grease strictly to the backing plate contact points where the shoes rest.
- Bed them in: Complete a series of initial, moderate braking applications at low speed to fully seat the new friction material against the drum.
- Adjust manually: Turn the star wheel adjuster until the wheel locks up slightly, then back it off 3 to 5 clicks until the drum rotates with minor resistance.
- Don’t contaminate linings: Avoid touching the friction faces of the shoes with greasy hands, tools, or lubrication sprays.
- Don’t swap left and right: Never mix up left-hand and right-hand assemblies, as the self-activating mechanism must face the correct direction.
- Don’t reuse worn springs: Avoid keeping weak, heat-stretched return springs; always replace them alongside your shoes to ensure complete release.
- Don’t use old drums: Never fit new shoes into heavily grooved or out-of-round drums without having them machined or replaced first.
- Don’t use high pressure: Avoid blasting the backing plate assembly with compressed air; instead, use specialized brake cleaner spray to manage dust safely.
